Red Clover

Red Clover is a short-lived perennial of the pea family that grows up to 50 cm. in height and has distinctive 'club-shaped' leaves and unique pink flowers

LEAVES:

- usually with three leaflets

- dark green

FLOWERS:

- pinkish purple or red

- dense, round heads (3 cm. long) consisting of many small (10 mm.), tube-shaped flowers

- Red Clover flowers smell like honey; sweet smelling

- Red Clover blooms in summer

- just below the flower head are 2 leaves

FRUIT:

- a small pod with 2 seeds

HABITAT:

- Red Clover grows in low to mid elevations

- Red Clover is common in fields and disturbed areas

- Red Clover was imported from Europe

- can be grown to increase the fertility of soil and control soil erosion

- bumblebees and honey bees are attracted to the honey scent and nectar of Red Clover; clover honey is a very popular treat
